...ensuring that future generations have a love and respect
for the contribution music and theatre arts make
to their lives, to our culture—to all humanity.

Co-owner and theatre instructor
Sylvia Haynie

was the long-time drama director
at Stratford Academy
prior to fulfilling her dream
of establishing a fine arts school
by opening the
Academy of the Performing Arts
in 2004.

During her tenure at Stratford she annually produced and directed three large-scale productions and two student-developed performances, as well as overseeing an active drama club, teaching a variety of course work, and organizing study trips to New York. Under her direction, Stratford's yearly One-Act Play entry won ten region and six Georgia Independent School AAA State Championships.

In addition to her work in an educational setting, Ms. Haynie has numerous credits with both adult and children's community and professional theatres. She was twice chosen to serve as the producing director for the Macon/Bibb County Chamber of Commerce's "Red Carpet Tour" showcase of the arts, which was presented on the stages of the Grand Opera House and the Douglass Theatre. She has producted, directed, choreographed and served as musical director for productions on numerous stages across Georgia and West Virginia. As a playwright, her stage adaptations and original works have been produced by high schools, touring companies and professional children's theatre troupes. Over the past 25 years she has provided services as an adjudicator, guest speaker and workshop clinician for a variety of events sponsored by groups such as the Georgia Independent School Association and the Georgia High School Association.

Ms. Haynie is the daughter of Martha and Franklin Shirah of Hawkinsville and has two sons: J.P., now a senior theatre major at Mercer University, and Michael, a freshman theatre major at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.
