Laura Voss, co-owner of the APA has served as a band director, music director, instructor, composer and arranger for area schools, theatres and civic organizations. For the APA she serves as percussion instructor and director for our indoor marching band program: Express! As a private instructor, Voss concentrates on preparing percussion students for a well-rounded skill set, including drum set and traditional concert percussion training. Her percussion ensembles and women’s “Stomp” class students are featured in concerts twice each year and often make local appearances. Many of her students have auditioned for and been selected for district honor band, all-region band, GISA All-Select, the Governor’s Honor Program and GHSA All-State Band.
Since 1983, she has served as the band director for Stratford Academy, providing music instruction and leadership for the entire band program covering grades 5 through 12. Her time at Stratford is spent teaching and directing the 5th grade beginning band, 6th grade intermediate and the high school Marching and Symphonic Bands. Prior to opening the Academy, Ms. Voss was the Band Director and Fine Arts Department Chair for Stratford Academy from 1983 to 2004. After a brief time to get the APA up and operational, Ms. Voss returned to Stratford in 2007, where she continues to serve as Fine Arts Department Chair and Band Director. Ms. Voss was one of the founders of the Georgia Independent School Association All Select Band, Orchestra, and Chorus and chaired the annual clinics and performances numerous times.
Starting in 2004, Ms. Voss has served as a guest director for Macon Little Theatre, providing musical direction and serving as show percussionist for a huge variety of shows including: Legally Blonde, Hairspray and Wedding Singer to classics such as Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music and Annie – as well as musical review shows such as All Night Strut, Swing and Always, Patsy Cline. Along with Haynie, she also co-directs all APA musicals and the summer kid’s camp in conjunction with Macon Little Kids Theatre, with a string of hits including Shrek, Jr. (2016) Beauty and The Beast (2015) Willy Wonka (2014) The Little Mermaid (2013) Seaussical (2012) and many more going back to 2005.
Ms. Voss serves as music director and show percussionist for the musical review of the Macon Civic Club Show. In addition to her performance each night as the show percussionist and bandleader, she also contributes hours of work as arranger for the musical numbers performed at the Grand by the Civic Club members. Also as a composer/arranger, her band and percussion ensemble works have been performed by numerous high school and college programs. Together with Sylvia Haynie she authored two original works, Traditions and a new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. She also frequently works as a band and percussion clinician and adjudicator for events sponsored by the Georgia Independent School Association, The Georgia Music Educators Association, and the Georgia High School Association. Laura found her way to a career in music mostly due to her father and uncle’s encouragement. Both Gene and Glen Voss were professional country musicians for many years performing on the road and as studio musicians in Nashville. Laura’s mother, Ann, has been seen in local theatre productions including appearances in two shows co-directed by her own daughter.
